Assalamu aleikum Dear Ummah,

It’s very hard to swallow the fact that we cheer and praise when a non-Muslim revert to Islam but most of time we don’t help them know the way to perform salaat amongst other things. This post may help Muslim born as well who don’t practice Islam but would like to start. It can also be helpful to teaching children.

(Picture from American Muslim Memes) It’s funny but true :/

It’s very easy to become Muslim. You recite the shahada in front of witnesses and you’re IT! However, without a proper integration mechanism, these converts are left on the sidelines and easily forgotten by the Ummah that rejoiced when they took the oath. That said, it’s also the responsibility of the revert to find the knowledge and our Ummah should facilitates that process for them.

As a revert, below are some of the basics you need to know:

The Shahada (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ)

Ash Hadu An La Ilaha IllAllah Wa Ashadu An Na Muhammadan Abduhu Wa Rasuluhu

(I testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah. And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger).

Al Fatiha (the opening surah in Arabic). Below is the phonetic to make it easier:

1) Bismi Allāhi Ar-Raĥmāni Ar-Raĥīmi

2) Al-Ĥamdu Lillāhi Rabbi Al-`Ālamīna

3) Ar-Raĥmāni Ar-Raĥīmi

4) Māliki Yawmi Ad-Dīni

5) ‘Īyāka Na`budu Wa ‘Īyāka Nasta`īnu

6) Ihdinā Aş-Şirāţa Al-Mustaqīma

7) Şirāţa Al-Ladhīna ‘An`amta `Alayhim Ghayri Al-Maghđūbi `Alayhim Wa Lā Ađ-Đāllīna

– The five Pillars of Islam :

  • Shahadah: I testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
  • Salat: Pray five times a day
  • Zakat: giving 2.5% of one’s savings to the poor and needy
  • Sawm: fasting and self-control during the blessed month of Ramadan
  • Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime one is able to

– The six pillars of Iman (faith) :

Salaat (briefly) :

  • Make wudu
  • Be clean (body, clothes, and place where salaat is to be performed)

– The composition of salaat (obligatory-farida and surerogatory-nafila) :

  1. Farida acts :
  • Say niyyat (intention)
  • the first takbir (Allahu Akbar)
  • recite al-fatiha standing up (there are exceptions to this such as sick or handicapped people)
  • perform ruku (genuflexion)
  • perform two sudjood (prosternation) for each rakat
  • straighten up and sit up for salam
  • perform these sitting acts in a correct manner
  • and perform all these farida acts in the required order

2. Nafila acts :

  • Recite a surah after the fatiha in the 1st and 2nd rakat
  • stand up to read the nafila surah
  • read aloud for the Soubh prayer, the Djuma prayer, the first two rakats of Magrib and Isha
  • read with a lower voice for the prayers of Dhur, Asr, the last rakat of Magrib, and the last two rakats of Isha
  • any other takbir besides the very first one
  • say ‘samee alahu liman hamdahou’
  • sit down and read the tachahoud (tahiyat)
  • recite ‘salat nabiyi’ after the tachahoud

– The acts that void salaat

  • Includes the omission of anything outlined in ‘Salaat (briefly)’ above
  • the omission of a farida act

-Know Al-Adzan (the muezzin call) :

hayya ‘ala-l-falâh

qadå qamati-ssalâh qadå qamati-ssalâh

Allâhu akbar, Allâhu akbar

lââ ilâha illa-llâh”

-Niyyat (intention) for each farida salaat :

Wa barakatuhu

As-aslamu alayna wa ala abadil-lahis-saleeheena

Ash hadu an La ilaha illAllah wa ashadu an na muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluhu.”
