Bismillah,
In Islam, if you speak the words “renew wedding vows” the ummah bidat radar goes into full alert! And it’s understandable because it’s mainly a non-Muslim concept these days. That said, can you renew your nikah contract? Yes! In the source Durr-Ul-Mukhtar, there is the following dua:
Allahumma innee uridu an ujaddidal eemana wannikaaha tajdeedan bi-qawli laa ilaaha illallah Muhammadun Rasoolullah.
This dua is also used to renew one’s iman (faith). All you need is two witnesses to you (the couple) to say these words. It’s also advised to do this at least once a month for nikah contract renewal. For your testament of faith renewal, it’s advised to say it once a week or biweekly.
You can also appoint your husband to renew your vows if he’s going to be in a group of men that know about this sunnah procedure. It’s a very simple affair but you can make it more romantic if you want. Please don’t go overboard and imitate non-Muslims now and fall in bidat traps lol!
I say, once in a blue moon, prepare a nice romantic night or weekend after renewing your nikah and iman. The rest of the time, just do it for maintenance of your deen. I hope this helps! Read more here.
Houb salam, happy belated Eid Mubarak, and jazak’Allah khair for reading,

Aslamalaikum you say that you need 2 witnesses could this be anyone? does it have to be a family member? And also the 2 witness could it be women or does it have to be men? Also does the husband and wife sit across each other when renewing the nikkah?

Wa aleikum salam. The sources just say two witnesses so any Muslim adult qualifies. A woman only delegates her husband to renew her vows and faith when she doesn’t have witnesses or observes mahram rules. Otherwise, if mahram rule or free mixing concern is not the case, one can renew the vows the way the man and the nikah sat during the original nikah contract. Allahu alim.

Wa aleikum salam Hana. Sorry to hear that. You should definitely renew your nikah to start on a new fresh page and rekindle your bond in my honest opinion (Keep in mind I’m not a scholar. Just a practical being with a knack for marital advice 😉 ) Jazakh’Allah khair for stopping by and praying that your union is blessed by Allah here on out, ameen!

As salaam alaykum, I love to read the translation of prayers to connect to their meaning more – I was wondering if you knew the official translation in English of this dua? Since we have already had a nikah, would it be acceptable to consider (dare I say…) holding hands when this prayer is being recited? We are from a liberal background and hugged on stage after the nikah, if this helps.

Wa aleikum salam. I copied and pasted from my source : “Renewal of Faith and Nikah
Every Muslim must have his/her children memorize the formula of faith that reads, “Aamantu billahi wa malaaikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi wal-yawmil-aakhiri wa bil-qadari khayrihi wa sharrihi minallahi ta’ala wal-ba’thu ba’dal-mawti haqqun ashhadu an laa ilaaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh,” and teach its meaning to them well. If a child does not believe in these six fundamentals of faith, he/she is not considered a Muslim, but an apostate (murtad), when he/she reaches puberty.
The prayer for renewal of faith (iman)
O my Rabb! I repent of all my wrong and false beliefs, which I have held from the moment I reached puberty up to now as a result of being taken in by the enemies of Islam and heretical people. I also repent of whatever I said, listened to, saw, and did of the religious innovations and sins. I have decided firmly and have fully intended that I will not do such misdeeds from now on. The first of prophets is Adam ‘alaihis-salam and the last of them is our Prophet, Muhammad ‘alaihis-salam. I believe in these two prophets as well as all the prophets that were sent between these two. All of them are haqq (truth, reality), and whatever they said is true.
Aamantu billah wa bi-maa jaa-a min ‘indillah ‘ala muraadillah wa aamantu bi-rasoolillah wa bi-maa jaa-a min ‘indi rasulillah ‘ala muraad-i Rasoolullah. Aamantu billahi wa malaaikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi wal-yawmil-aakhiri wa bil-qadari khayrihi wa sharrihi minallahi ta’ala wal-ba’thu ba’dal-mawti haqqun ashhadu an laa ilaaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh.
The prayer for renewal of faith and nikah
To renew nikah (Islamic marriage contract) is very easy. After a man gets a verbal proxy from his wife first, he should say in the presence of two witnesses, “I have remarried my wife, who has been my wife before this renewal, acting by proxy on her behalf and in person on my behalf.”
Additionally, the following prayer is recommended to be recited:
Allahumma innee uridu an ujaddidal eemana wannikaaha tajdeedan bi-qawli laa ilaaha illallah Muhammadun Rasoolullah.” http://www.myreligionislam.com/detail.asp?aid=6038
I hope this helps. PDA is a bit makruh in Islam but if you’re liberal, do what fits your lifestyle (Holding and hugging) insha’Allah xx.

Salam, I was wondering whether it would be possible when renewing Nikah to re-emphasis or include mutually agreeable conditions for example zero tolerance or acceptance of polygamy?
Thank you Sister for your advice.

Wa aleikum salam. Marriage is a contract. As such, clauses are always negotiable. Allahu alim.
