Our Eid

Bismillah,

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Give each other gifts and you will love each other.”

Five days before Ramadhan, I started thinking of Eid preparations. A day later, I bought the groceries we needed for the celebration. As we inched three days closer to the main event, I was worrying about decorating the apartment and gift ideas. Decorating for Eid was a first for me. I wanted to do this project before Ramadhan started but I figured my son was too young to realize the difference. But I realized that I need some practice before next year when he’s older and running around. Becoming a parent makes you see things under a new light. We have two great Eid so that we can rejoice. We should take advantage of them and celebrate to the fullest within halal limits of course so that our children don’t envy Christmas or Easter. In order for that to not happen, I’m ready to make Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha memorable in my household going forward.

So going back to the story. Sorry, I get sidetrack a lot ;). At Three days before the Eid, I stayed up late cutting ‘Ramadan Eid Mubarak’ free online printables and wrapping up gifts. I was going to recycle all that paper anyway so I didn’t see the need to buy fancy paper for these decorations. I just made sure I printed my decorations in colors. And for us they weren’t tacky.

Eid treat box

Pinterest was a great resource masha’Allah.

One day before the Eid, I baked banana cupcakes and a revani dessert. They turned out great masha’Allah. I jabbed my ‘Bismillah’ banner and ‘Eid Mubarak’ flags unto them and I was ready for the D-Day.

The day of the Eid, I took a shower upon waking up, prayed fajr, wished Eid Mubarak to the family and friends, gave out gifts and went cooking more traditional dishes before heading out to visit family members and friends. I didn’t pray the eid prayer but I offered two rakats upon my visit to the mosque which was after all the Eid prayers scheduled that day.

That night, we had a wonderful family dinner out and wasted the rest of day at a roof top watching the stars. Saturday and Sunday were also fun as we ate tons and relaxed under the starry night, masha’Allah, far removed from the noisy restaurants and weekend night life. We talked about the Islam and life in general. It was memorable alhamdullilah.
