Pants for a Muslimah?

Bismilah,

Here is a touchy subject around the globe ;). Can a Muslim woman wear pants? Hmmm…..So pants?

pants

or only dresses and skirts?skirtsNdresses

Well it depends on many things. Personally, I don’t wear pants outside the comfort of my home. I used to wear them outside but these days, I am so used to wear skirts and dresses that I feel very awkward wearing pants to go outside. I just feel naked if I try to put a foot outside the door, so I just don’t. But I do wear pants under clothing when Winter hits so that I don’t get cold.

So can she wear it? She can wear pants if it’s part of her culture and the dress on top is long enough to cover her behind.Β  Assuming that her clothes are not too tight and are loose. That said, some scholars will argue that she can’t under any circumstances. I think they exaggerate. I don’t like un-flexible point of views..borderline extreme… They based their argument on the hadith sherif that states that women that dress in men clothing are cursed and vice-versa. I think we know this wasn’t meant for women that wear pants conservatively but for men that have women mannerisms and clothe in women clothing and vice-versa.

A lot of them won’t hear this rebuttal of their thesis because there is also a cultural belief lurking in their minds; a woman who wear pants will become the leader of the family. ‘Nonsense πŸ˜› .’

In addition, they will agree that she wears pants privately where noone can see except them. Whether she hides it from people or not, she still wears them so how come she is not leading the home according to ‘your standards’? Ah, she leads the family anyways. She is just discrete about it and lets you believe you’re in charge ;). She is the moon and you’re the sun.

I can’t recall all the details of the story I am about to tell you but I read somewhere that a lady was near the prophet (sallalahu aleihi wasalam) and she fell. I think she was on a horse. Maybe a donkey. He turned his head so that he couldn’t see her privates. Later, his companions around him told him that they didn’t see anything because she wore pants under her clothing. He then prayed for her and any woman who does the same to protect her privates. See, women can wear pants! Having said that, it is not said that it’s compulsory to hide your pants. It’s just preferable and it has more barakah (blessings).

What do you think of women wearing pants? Please share your thoughts!

  1. I love the way you lightened up this post with a touch of humor sis πŸ˜‰ I used to wear pants until maxi dresses and maxi skirts came in style about 3 years ago, and I haven’t worn pants outside the house for the most part since then. Much like you, I just don’t feel comfortable in pants after wearing long skirts and dresses anymore. Oh wait, I just remembered I do wear palazzo pants, but they look like a very loose maxi skirt πŸ˜‰ Honestly, I believe that as long as you don’t show the shape of your body, you will be okay insha’Allah! Allah knows best! πŸ™‚

Masha’Allah, I am glad you liked it and that we share some things in common. I completely agree. As long as they don’t show your shape, you should be fine πŸ˜‰ and as always, Allahu alim! πŸ™‚

Interesting, I never realized that many in the Ummah are still on this debate of women wearing pants, each to her own and its really no business of society, men or whatsoever to tell us that we shouldn’t be wearing pants or trousers.
Considering the amount of sexual abuse and street abuse Muslim women face in our countries, wearing our flimsy clothing that also include shalwar kameez loose fitting pants that make us much vulnerable to many a sleazy touches, by perverted men who know the laws/ societal mindsets will let them get away with just a touch to rape etc etc and in some places that is the nonsensical reasoning behind pushing women inside veils and full burkas, but coming back to the point – I know scores of women who have/do and wish to do wear jeans pants because they are anti-rape pants as we jokingly call them here, sighs. Jokes aside, we have been wearing pants because in that way at-least we can guard our body parts bit better then having that perverted b******* hand on the thigh, back etc. The same society opposing pants is responsible for all these crimes against women. Unbelievable.
Frankly, Islam might have come into Arabia where women wearing pants was not part of culture, but in many other parts of the world non Arab Muslim women wear pants πŸ˜‰

I agree with you on a lot of points. It’s like sometimes SOME men do things purposely to push you the way they want you to go. My girlfriend knows a girl that only covered because she was wearing shorts and got into a taxi in a middle east and that triggered the driver to start jerking off right before her eyes! Excuse my language but who does that??? Oh by the way, I just saw your post on asian clothing, nice! Will comment soon and I am working on the blog award
      btw ;).

They do have pants and are part of the south Asian culture I truly admire. They’re fine. That said, I have seen men in my surroundings eye them differently ;). In other words, they don’t approve.

Interesting post. I’ve thought of that too, I think basically we’re supposed to nake sure we don’t reveal our body shape and I suppose wearing dresses and skirts are probably with more barakah like you mentioned 😊
